Raul Brandão
João Canijo
Release Date: 01-05-2012
In Nespereira, Guimarães, where Raul Brandão once lived, two different levels of memory about the writer have subsist. On the part of his relatives, there is veneration for the forgotten genius, though these recollections do not extend beyond the private family domain. Amongst the local population, the ignorance prevails, and the memory of the great writer has blurred with that of the Lady from the rich house where they used to go to beg for alms…

Director's Statement
This film is a research about the Portuguese inability to perceive things as they really are and the confusion of memory that results. Raul Brandão is a paradigmatic example of what is inscribed into a confused psychic and historic blank, where almost nothing leaves a trace.

Raul Brandão may have left a confused mark upon the population of Nespereira, but in this case not even the land itself had a trace to leave. There is no collective memory that can organise the parish of Nespereira because then, as now, it did not exist as a structured village.
